Extracurricular Activities & Clubs


Montessori Academy students are welcome to join a variety of activities and clubs including:

String Orchestra

The String orchestra program is designed for children 4 years old and up. Upper School offers group violin/cello lessons, while Lower School program offers group violin lessons. Students will learn to play the instrument including fundamental techniques and music appreciation. The students will perform at Winterfest as well as the-end-of-year recital.

Upper School students Schedule is:
Beginners/Intermediate Class 3:15 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Advanced Class from 4:00 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.

Lower School students schedule is:
12:45 to 1:30 p.m. or, 1:30 to 2:15 p.m., or 2:15 p.m.

Class Fee:
The monthly fee for these classes is $130.00 and it is due by the first of each month; this payment covers 4 classes per month. Please keep in mind that some months have 5 classes and some have 3 classes due to school breaks and holidays [classes will average 4 classes a month for the entire school year]. There is no pro-rating for missed classes due to sickness or vacation.

Robotics

The Robotics Club, in partnership with FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL®) inspires future scientists and engineers. In a team atmosphere studens will use LEGO MINDSTORMS® technologies to design, build, and program autonomous robots in a team setting. They will research challenges facing today’s scientists, and use the science and math concepts they learn in school to solve those real world problems in a practical, hands-on manner.

Children will:

  • Learn teamwork skills
  • Build self-confidence, knowledge, and career and life skills
  • Discovery of the fun in science and technology
  • Real-world application of science and math concepts
  • Do hands-on problem solving
  • Gain programming experience
  • Complete a research presentation project

Class Schedule:

  • Lower Elementary: will meet Tuesdays from 3:30pm – 4:30pm
  • Upper Elementary: will meet Thursdays from 3:30pm – 4:30pm

Flamenco

Flamenco is a folkloric dance from Spain. Ms. Elizabeth guides her students towards mastery of body posture and the intricate movements of the hands, arms and feet of this exhilarating dance. All ages welcome!

Ballet

Under the tutelage of Ms. Chris, dance students are introduced to the different elements and techniques of the different dance styles.

Spanish Club

This class is designed to teach children how to communicate effectively and acquire vocabulary in Spanish. This will be accomplished through didactic activities, storytelling, rhymes, and songs that will participate with great enthusiasm. These classes are offered to children of all ages.
The main focus is to have children learn how to introduce themselves, describe aspects of their lives and environment. Conversation, narration and description will be practiced weekly.

Classes to be held every Wednesday from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. $35.00 per month.

Chess Club

Chess is a complex mental movement. Chess allows the child to improve their self-confidence, their intuition and concentration, and develops their logical and critical thinking. It is an activity that fosters thinking, values, judgement, decision making, and analysis…

Cartoon / Comics Drawing Club

The students will learn hot to draw their favorite comics characters. The instruction provided will take the child through all the basic steps to make this a fun-filled experience.

Schedule:
Class schedules will be made based on the amount of children registered. Classes will be held every Tuesday from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Schedule may change as classes are set.

Basketball

Basketball will be offered once a week from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and it is open for registration to all Elementary and Middle School students [1st through 8th grade].

All students participating in the Basketball Club must wear the Montessori Academy P.E. uniform to class.

The club will begin meeting after the Labor Day holiday. Session capacity is limited, so act fast to lock in your spot in this emerging club.

Etiquette

Our school is partnering with the Etiquette Factory to bring their latest program to you. Children will learn that having good manners is about respecting others and yourself. Several recent studies conducted by Harvard University, Stanford Research Institute, and the Carnegie Foundation showed that 85% of our future success depends on social skills. Children will learn and practice social etiquette skills they will need to carry them through life such as:

  • Greeting and introductions
  • Hand shaking and eye contact
  • Conversation and listening skills
  • Table manners and much more!

Schedule:

  • Class schedules will be made based on the amount of children registered.
  • Pre-K and Kinder will be scheduled during the course of the day,
  • Lower Elementary 1 through 3, will be scheduled after 3:00 p.m.
  • class is limited to 15 students per class.
  • Schedule may change as classes are set.

Volleyball

Our volleyball program offers an invigorating and fun activity for students in 4th – 8th grade. Participants will learn the basic rules, procedures, and customs  of the game as well as fundamentals and advanced techniques.

Ceramics

Students in 1st through 8th grade will explore their creative abilities and participate in projects such as rolling pin creations, sculptures, animals, portraits, masks, and 2 dimensional murals.

Computer Club

The Montessori Academy Computer Club is geared towards students from 2nd grade through 5th grade. The intention of this class is to introduce our kids to computer algorithms using fun tools develop at MIT labs followed by getting hands-on simple computer programming using Python.

Class Fee: The monthly fee for these classes is $45.00 and it is due by the first of each month; this payment covers 4 classes per month. Please keep in mind that some months have 5 classes and some have 3 classes due to school breaks and holidays [classes will average 4 classes a month for the entire school year]. There is no pro-rating for missed classes due to sickness or vacation.

Karate

Karate is one of those disciplines that help children develop their physical coordination, balance, flexibility, and mental acuity. Karate also helps your child develop athletic abilities and self-awareness, which in turn enhances the child’s capabilities in self-defense. Although, Martial Arts are viewed mostly as a method of physical improvement, it is most importantly a precursor to mental and moral development.

All of the lessons are tailored to your child’s age and physical ability. Your child begins by practicing basic patterns and forms, which involve blocking, kicking and striking. Your child will be having fun in a safe and positive environment while making friends along the way.

Class schedule will be made based on the amount of children registered. Pre-K and Kinder will be scheduled during the course of the day, and Elementary and Middle School after 2:30 p.m. – Classes are limited to 20 studnets per class. Schedule may change as classes are set.

An official Karate uniform is required for this class. You can purchase a uniform from Mr. Asesor for $35.00. It takes approximately 1 to 2 weeks for the uniforms to arrive.

Class Fee: The monthly fee for these classes is $40.00 and it is due by the first of each month; this payment covers 4 classes per month. Please keep in mind that some months have 5 classes and some have 3 classes due to school breaks and holidays [classes will average 4 classes a month for the entire school year]. Salsa

Kids Salsa Class: Kids make friends, get exercise and learn the basics of Salsa dance. Whether experienced in dance or a complete beginner, our classes will give them a foundation of Salsa music and dance steps; along with [basic] footwork and dance steps. These dance classes are unique in the area.

There are also many proven health benefits of dance for kids, aside from just the cardio workout and social aspect. Some of the specific health benefits of dance for kids include:

  • Increase in self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Increased focus, creativity and discipline
  • Increased hand-eye coordination and improved fine motor skills
